Located on the west coast of the United States, California has the largest population of any state in the Union. Originally colonized in the later part of the 18th century by the Spanish it became a part of the United States On September 9, 1850.
An important part of California history is the Gold Rush. This single event changed the face of California, turning it from a state of tiny towns into a state full of large cities. California is geographically diverse with mountain ranges, deserts and coastal areas and is most famous for being the entertainment capital of the world. It is interesting to note that if California was ranked alongside the rest of the countries of the world for population, California would be the 35th most populous in the entire world! California derived its name from the famous Queen Calafia of the Amazons. Its beautiful and diverse climate, rich economy and the lure of Hollywood makes California one of America’s favorite states.
