Delaware Travel Information

Located on the Atlantic Ocean, Delaware is named after Thomas West, a British Nobleman and the first Governor of Virginia. Centrally located between the Chesapeake and Delaware Bay, Delaware is actually the second smallest state in the Union. One of the state’s most unique characteristics is the fact that it has only three counties.

Originally inhabited by Native American Lenape and Nanticoke Delaware was settled by the Dutch near the present day town of Lewes. It was one of the thirteen colonies that took part in the American Revolution.

Delaware’s claim to fame is the fact that it was the first state to ratify the constitution in 1787. Delaware’s economy is based mostly in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries. In fact, one of its biggest employers is DuPont. Another large employer is the military and the installation at Dover is the military base all deceased service men return home to.
