Idaho is located in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. Its capital and second largest city is Boise. Idaho became a member of the Union on July 3, 1890 and is the 43rd state to do so.
Idaho is famous for the star garnets that are located there. In fact it is the only place in the world that a six point star garnet has ever been found. Because of this, Idaho is known as the “Gem State.” Its state motto is “Let it be Forever.” Archeological studies seem to prove that humans have lived in the region of Idaho for more that 14,000 years.
Originally inhabited by the Nez Perce and the Shoshone Indians, Idaho eventually became a part of the Oregon Territory before becoming a state. Legend has it that Idaho got its name from a joke: When congress was considering it for statehood a lobbyist by the name of George Willing suggested the word Idaho, claiming it was a Shoshone word for “Gem of the Mountains.” He later claimed that he made it up.
