Located in the American Heartland, Iowa is named for the Ioway people, a local Native American tribe who inhibited the area prior to its annexation by European powers. Originally settled by the French, Iowa became the 29th state in the union on December 28, 1846.
Iowa has a large and diverse population and economy. Once known as the “food capital of the world” Iowa has diversified its economy to include green energy production, biotechnology, financial services and advanced manufacturing. Recent poles and statistics rate Iowa as the safest state to live and show some of the highest literacy rates in the country. The most populous city, Des Moines, is also the capital of Iowa.
Iowa was among the forerunners in enacting legislation that made discrimination illegal. In fact Iowa’s Supreme Court passed legislation banning ‘separate but equal’ schooling for different races nearly 85 years before the United States Supreme Court did. Herbert Hoover, Ashton Kutcher and Johnny Carson were all born in Iowa.
