Kentucky Travel Information

While Kentucky is geographically a part of the southern region of the United States, it is often considered culturally a Midwest state. Most famously known for the Kentucky Derby and its long standing tradition of thoroughbred breeding and horse race, Kentucky’s nickname is the “Bluegrass State.” It is named this because of the predominance of Kentucky bluegrass on its many farms and pasture lands. One of only four commonwealth states in the union, the official name is The Commonwealth of Kentucky. While originally a part of Virginia, it became the 15th state to enter the union in 1792.

Kentucky is home to the longest system of caves in the entire world and home to the greatest number of turkey and deer in the United States.

It also has the country’s largest and most successful coalfield. In additional to the horse industry, Kentucky is known for bluegrass music, bourbon and tobacco.
