Louisiana Travel Information

Louisiana became a part of the United States through the famous Louisiana Purchase. Named by Rene-Robert Cavelier, who claimed the territory for France, Louisiana means “Land of Louis” and was meant to honor King Louis XIV of France. Located in the southern portion of the United States, Louisiana is known for its ethnic diversity.

Because of its history, being at various times part of both the Spanish and the French empires as well as a history of slave trade, Louisiana is home to large Spanish, French and African American populations. While the largest city in the state is New Orleans, the capital is Baton Rouge.

Louisiana is the only state in the union to not divide itself into counties; instead it has divided itself into numerous parishes that function much like the county of other states. In recent years, Louisiana has been devastated by several hurricanes, most notably Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
