SEO or Search Engine Optimization is a technique which helps a website to rank high in the different search engines. The SEO process can be divided into two types: on-page and off-page. Directory submission is an important off-page optimization process. ‘Links’ play an important part in determining the position of a website in the search engines. Quality inbound links or back links help a website to improve it’s rank. Directory submission helps a website to gain quality back links.
There are thousands of directories available on the net. Some of them are paid whereas the others are free. The largest directories are DMOZ and Yahoo. Some directories accept all types of websites whereas others only accept some particular categories. You can not expect much traffic from directory submission but it definitely helps to improve your search engine rank.
When going for directory submission it is better to go for paid directories. These directories are the best because the links last for a long time. On the other hand, there are many free directories which delete the links after some time, say, one year. However, there are many established free directories which can be used for submission. The older a directory, the better it is.
Submission of your website to a directory involves filling up of a form. You have to provide the URL of your homepage and other descriptions. Each directory may have different sets of guidelines and you have to follow those guidelines. After submission, your site will be reviewed by an editor. Mere submission of your site to a directory does not guarantee that it will be accepted for inclusion. It will be accepted only after the editor is satisfied about the quality, quantity and relevancy of your site’s content.
Directory submission should be done over time. Instead of submitting your site to 100 directories in three days, you should spread the submission over a three month period. It will be more effective in building quality back links.
